Great Googly Moogly
Has it really been since the end of February since my last post? What a slacker! OK, so I actually have had a couple of updates to put out here, so let me see if I can catch everyone up.
I broke down and went to the dentist in March. Now, that may sound trivial to a lot of folks, but for me it is generally very traumatic. I have not been to a formal dentist since 1994 (yeah, I know) and decided this last open enrollment period that I'd sign up for the DMO offered at work. That is the dental equivalent of an HMO, and that means if you play the gatekeeper game, you pay very, very little for dental care. So, I chose a Dental PCP and called this dentist I chose based on location and proximity to the house and called this office to establish an appointment. The first was just a cleaning and checkup, including the full set of X-rays. Considering the length of time it had been, I wasn't too displeased with the results. I had no new cavities, instead I had a cracked tooth around an old filling, and another filling that was leaking. I knew I had some mouth pain on that side when sugars, hot or cold hit the area, but I had expected much worse. The technician gave me the standard hassle about not brushing enough, not brushing the right way, and not flossing. *yawn* Still, I did take her seriously, and now do some flossing, and have switched to soft bristle tooth brushes and brushing twice a day.
The exam required that I come back to fix the found issues. That meant coming back in for shots and fillings. For those of you that don't know me well (like anyone reads this any more) I do not like getting shots at all, and even less so in my mouth. So, it was with more than a little trepidation that I agreed to schedule the next appointment. When I came back, I was pale and clammy (I actually like diaphoretic which is the medical term to indicate heavy sweating, but I thought I'd use a word most folks can relate to.) as I sat in the waiting room for the appointment. I got back to the chair, and by then I was manic. Of course, most of it was much ado about nothing, as I did get through the appointment without incident. I will say, however, that either novacaine is a heavy anesthetic, or dentists need to learn how to do nerve blocking more effectively as I came home with a numb gumline, a fat lip, and numb nose and a slight droop in the eyelid on that side. All transient, of course, but seriously. :-)
In the end, I now have a healthy, happy jaw. I knew something was wrong while in Australia, and I was determined to fix it before I had my next trip lined out. I have to go back in 4 months (now three) instead of the typical 6 months for a cleaning, since I am on dental probation. Oh well, it is good to get back into that routine. I shouldn't have let it go this long, and I have been trying to take better care of myself medically, so why would I neglect my teeth?
Our one year wedding anniversary!! Woo-hoo! Colleen actually didn't leave me! It is hard to believe we are at our one year anniversary (well, that was the end of April, so it has been a week or so ago from this post.) We decided to keep it simple this year, relatively speaking. We got up early on Saturday morning on the 22nd and drove to Paramount Carowinds and spend the day at the amusement park. I love roller coasters, despite my irrational fear of heights. We managed to get good weather, despite it raining most of the way down to Charlotte. I had never been to the park before. I found it novel that it was actually on the border, and there were parts in SC and parts in NC. There was even a roller coaster that runs along the border and goes through both states. Since it had been raining off and on, we decided to skip the wooden coasters and for some reason The Borg Assimilator was up and down for maintenance the whole time. All in all, an awesome day.
We stayed at a Renaissance Suites hotel, and despite the fact that they didn't give us the smoking room or the king bed, they did have a very nice bottle of champagne and some awesome chocolate covered strawberries waiting for us. I wanted to surprise Colleen with that, but since she was there when I booked the room, it made it a little tough. LOL
For dinner, we decided to go a bit dressy, and then see what we could find. Since we weren't familiar with town, and had a bit of a champagne buzz working, we decided to try Villa Antonio which we found along the way. We were not disappointed. Wonderful food, reasonable ambiance, and outstanding service made this a dining experience worthy of our first anniversary. Yes, we spent more on dinner than we did for the hotel, but we both decided it was worth the splurge.
For our anniversary, we struggled with what to get one another. I had been talking about a new Intel MAC Mini
for my gift and Colleen wanted one of those diamond circle pendants. In the end, we decided getting one another a king sized bed was better. :-) We both have wanted one, and we definitely know we'll get more use out of it in the long run. Besides, we got an awesome deal on it. I must say, it is really comfortable.
Still no luck. We have moved up to recording her temperature in the morning and trying to predict ovulation. She's very worried about it. I don't blame her in some respects, but in others, I am sure if we quit thinking about it, we'll probably end up pregnant the very next month. Of course, that's likely just wishful thinking. Still, we keep at it. WORK, WORK, WORK!
Monthly poker for March was cancelled due to lack of attendance. I thought it was funny to have read prior posts and the excited tone of having 16 people at the house and then knowing that we couldn't get more than 5 to the house in March. Still, we did manage to have 12 for April, so that was two tables. I did make it to the table collapse into one table, but I was too far behind and got beaten on an all in when I had a pretty crappy pair and left my oponent the winning out on the river, which she managed to catch. Oh well, another month, another lesson learned.
Colleen and I booked our flight for Ireland, and her flight to meet me in England. Yes, somehow I managed to snag the trip to Wimbledon for the completion of my career grand slam. That will mean very soon I'll be posting another daily report on the blog. We're pretty excited, though we don't really have all the details worked out. Be on the lookout for updates on this front. I really am looking forward to the trip.
Cheers!
